So students can focus on learning, not surviving
Meeting Basic Needs So Students Can Focus on Learning
A student who is hungry cannot concentrate. A student without shelter cannot study. GIU's Living Assistance program addresses the most fundamental barriers to education — food, housing, and basic living expenses — so that students can devote their energy to learning rather than survival.
Many of GIU's scholarship recipients come from families that cannot provide even basic support while their children are at university. Without living assistance, these students would be forced to drop out despite having the academic ability to succeed. This program keeps them in school and on track to graduate.
What Living Assistance Covers
Housing
Hostel fees and housing support so students have a safe, stable place to live while attending university.
Food & Meals
Meal stipends and food assistance to ensure students are nourished and able to focus in the classroom.
Essential Supplies
Transportation, toiletries, clothing, and other basic necessities that students need to attend school with dignity.
Why Living Assistance Matters
Studies show that hunger and housing instability are among the top reasons university students in sub-Saharan Africa drop out before completing their degrees. A scholarship that covers tuition but not living expenses only solves half the problem. GIU's Living Assistance program fills that critical gap.
By ensuring that students have their basic needs met, GIU dramatically increases the likelihood that scholarship recipients will graduate and go on to productive careers. The $17,000 annual goal for this program provides living support for dozens of students throughout the academic year.

Help a Student Stay in School
$50 feeds a student for a month. $200 covers housing for a semester. Your donation ensures that no student drops out because they cannot afford to eat.
