37 pupils now learn at brand new desks
37 Pupils, Brand-New Desks, One Transformed Classroom
When GIU volunteers first visited a primary school in the Ayikuma District of Greater Accra, they found 37 pupils crammed into a deteriorating classroom. Many children sat on broken benches or on the bare floor. The chalkboard was cracked, the walls were peeling, and the roof leaked during rainy season.
Within weeks, GIU organized a full renovation. Walls were repainted, the roof was repaired, and brand-new desks were delivered — each one stamped with the words "Donated by GIU." For these 37 pupils, school became a place they were proud to attend.

The Transformation
The renovation was more than cosmetic. Research consistently shows that the physical learning environment directly impacts student attendance, engagement, and academic performance. Before the renovation, teachers reported absenteeism rates of over 30%. In the term following the renovation, attendance climbed to nearly 95%.
Community leaders and parents joined the renovation effort, contributing labor and helping with painting. The project became a point of pride for the entire community — proof that when outsiders invest in a village's children, the whole community rises.

Every Desk Tells a Story
Each desk stamped "Donated by GIU" is a daily reminder to these pupils that someone far away believes in their potential. It is a small thing — a desk — but it communicates dignity. It says: your education matters. Your future matters. You matter.
Help Us Renovate More Classrooms
For as little as $500, GIU can furnish an entire classroom with new desks. Your donation creates a learning environment where students can thrive.
