The Tree Library

An outdoor reading revolution in Ayikuma

500+ Pupils Discover the Joy of Reading

In the Ayikuma District of Greater Accra, most children had never held a book that wasn't a tattered textbook shared among five classmates. There was no library, no bookshop, and no reading room for miles. GIU saw an opportunity where others saw only limitation.

The Tree Library was born from a simple idea: if we cannot build a library building right away, we can bring books to where children already gather — under the shade of a large community tree. GIU donated hundreds of books, set up shelving, and organized a reading program that now serves over 500 pupils weekly.

More Than Books

The Tree Library is more than a collection of books beneath a tree. It has become the intellectual heart of the community. Volunteer mentors from GIU lead reading sessions, storytelling hours, and tutoring for pupils who are falling behind in school. Older students serve as reading buddies for younger children, building confidence and leadership skills.

Parents who never had access to books themselves now stop by to read with their children. The Tree Library has sparked a culture of reading in a community where none existed before.

The Vision

GIU's long-term goal is to build a permanent library structure in Ayikuma to house the growing collection and provide a dedicated learning space. Until then, the Tree Library stands as a testament to what is possible when creativity meets compassion. Every book donated is a door opened for a child who might otherwise never discover the power of reading.

Help Us Build a Permanent Library
