Health Education and Awareness for Underserved Communities

In many rural areas of Ghana, access to basic health education is scarce. Women go years without cancer screenings. Preventable diseases claim lives because communities lack the information to protect themselves. GIU's Healthcare program is changing that through awareness campaigns, nurse training, and community health seminars.

Led by GIU Board Member Dr. Kobina Amoah and supported by Dr. Agamah, the Healthcare program focuses on breast cancer awareness in the Volta Region, where screening rates are among the lowest in the country. The program has trained 16 nurses and conducted health seminars that have reached hundreds of women.

Breast Cancer Awareness in the Volta Region

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Ghanaian women, yet early detection rates in rural areas remain critically low. Many women have never heard of self-examination, and cultural stigma prevents open discussion about the disease. GIU's awareness campaigns break through that stigma with community-centered health seminars led by trained nurses and physicians.

Dr. Kobina Amoah brings deep medical expertise and a personal commitment to improving healthcare access in Ghana. Under his guidance, GIU has trained 16 nurses to serve as community health educators who continue the work long after GIU's events conclude. This train-the-trainer model ensures lasting impact.

Expanding Healthcare Access

With $20,000 in annual funding, GIU plans to expand its healthcare programming beyond breast cancer awareness to include maternal health education, malaria prevention, and mental health awareness. The program will also fund medical supply donations to community clinics and expand nurse training to additional regions of Ghana.

“The breast cancer awareness campaign reached hundreds of women who had never been screened. GIU is not just educating minds — they are saving lives across the Volta Region.”

— Dr. Kobina Amoah, GIU Board Member & Oncology Pharmacist

“This generator is a life saver. Last year there were hundreds of maternal deaths due to lack of electricity. Thanks to GIU and Kesse, all that has been eliminated going forward.”

— Clinic Administrator, Oyoko Health Centre
