Flag Football Program
55 students building character through sport
55 Students Discover Flag Football
Sports have the power to teach what no classroom can: resilience, teamwork, discipline, and the confidence that comes from pushing past your limits. GIU introduced flag football to 55 students in Ghana as part of its social impact programming, giving young people a new way to connect, compete, and grow.
For most of the participants, flag football was an entirely new sport. GIU provided all equipment — flags, footballs, cones, and jerseys — and brought in coaches to teach the fundamentals. What started as a single event has grown into an ongoing program that students look forward to every week.

More Than a Game
GIU's sports programs are designed to complement academic programming. Students who participate in flag football also attend mentorship sessions and motivational workshops. Coaches emphasize values like respect, hard work, and sportsmanship that carry over into the classroom and beyond.
For many young Ghanaians, organized sports are a luxury reserved for wealthier schools. By bringing flag football to underserved communities, GIU is leveling the playing field — literally and figuratively — and giving students an experience that builds character and community.

Growing the Program
GIU aims to expand its youth sports programming to include additional sports and reach more communities across Ghana. The organization is exploring partnerships with sports federations and corporate sponsors to fund equipment, coaching, and tournament events that give students something positive to work toward.
