GIU team at Oyoko Health Centre after donating 7.5 KVA generator
Where We Began

GIU in the Eastern Region

Oyoko, Koforidua is where founder Kesse Anyimadu was born — and where GIU’s most personal work happens. From a 7.5 KVA generator that powers a clinic to ongoing community partnerships, the Eastern Region is GIU’s home base.

The Origin Story

Founded in Oyoko, Koforidua

The Eastern Region of Ghana — anchored by the cities of Koforidua, Nkawkaw, Akim Oda, and Begoro — is one of the country’s most historically significant regions. It’s also where Kesse Anyimadu, GIU’s founder, grew up: a small village called Oyoko, just outside Koforidua.

Kesse’s childhood in Oyoko shaped everything about GIU. Before he became a CPA in the United States, he was a kid in a classroom with a bare concrete floor. Before he founded a nonprofit, he was a scholarship recipient himself. The Eastern Region isn’t just where GIU works — it’s where the founder owes his entire trajectory.

Our flagship Eastern Region project to date is the Oyoko Health Centre generator donation — a 7.5 KVA generator that has eliminated maternal deaths from power failures and now powers 150,000+ annual patient visits, day or night. Featured on 3News Ghana in January 2025.

“Before the generator, mothers in labor had to be turned away when the power went out. Now our clinic runs day and night. This is what happens when someone remembers where they came from.”

— Nana Sempe II, Chief of Oyoko, Koforidua
